What is a
PERSUASIVE SPEECH?
This speech
is intended to be read aloud in such a way that the listeners will be persuaded
to adopt your opinion. In this composition, you are advised to use up all or
most of the persuasive devices to be effective.
What are PERSUASIVE DEVICES?
Persuasive speeches often rely on convincing the reader more
through emotional appeal than through valid reasons. However it is supported by
evidence and relies upon persuasive devices to make its appeal. Some of the
techniques speakers or writers use to persuade their audience are the use of:
evidence
(authoritative, scientific, etc.)
analogy
(comparison to show similarity)
direct
personal appeal (refer by using you;
we…)
appeal
to emotion (‘tear- jerkers’; ‘upsetters’)
rhetorical
question (response implied in question)
repetition
contrast

Other persuasive techniques are some LITERARY DEVICES:
pun – a word or phrase suggesting 2
or more different meanings; a play on these words.
E.g. “To a lion, you would
be quite rare” or “Wally Browne… #1 in the #2 business”.
E.g. “I’m so tired, I could sleep for a year”.
sarcasm – used when the intention is
to hurt or offend. It indicates the attitude of speaker to subject. E.g. “Jonny
is late every day for school. Isn’t that a great way of showing interest in his
studies?”
Activity:
See how many of these devices you can identify in the following famous extract of
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
